Thinking about our students in Fort McMurray, Alberta! We had a great time!

December 26, 2009
We're planning a nine-day Starfish Circus in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada in February. Starfish Circus will be part of their Events Wood Buffalo WinterPLAY Festival 2010!

January 17th, 2008
Just finished Starfish Circus at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. The 90-minute show sold out - there were people in the aisles, on the stage apron, and sadly, turned away from the parking lot. Next time - two shows! We used our extra time in this fourteen day residency in a couple of fun ways:
- we started the process with an open Play Day, where any student who wanted to could drop in and play on the equipment in a low-stress, not-an-audition atmosphere.
- extra rehearsal time was used to give each act a theme and special music and costumes. Contortionists were elegant diners in a fine restaurant, rolla-bolla/globe/balancers were on a playground, and the aerial hoop artists were tango-ing zombies!

We also learned a few things:
- we really need two shows when there are 78 kids.
- we really need to put numbers on kids when there are 150 auditioning. On the up side, we loved our bonus people-with-the-same-name, and got some great extra performers that way!

Thanks to everyone who participated, and especially to our housing hosts, the McDaniel family. Can't wait to see you all in two years!

Starfish Circus opens for Stand Up Eight
Check out a Starfish Circus performance, then stay for Stand Up Eight, the new American circus.

Stand Up Eight stands out from other theatrical circuses with its groundbreaking and intertwined use of script, story, and skill. The creators of Stand Up Eight come from a diverse background of festival and street performing, relating to an audience mere feet away. Artistic Director, whip-cracker, fire-eater and aerialist Allison Williams elaborates, "Drawing on our experience presenting personal, interactive entertainment experiences to a variety of audiences, Stand Up Eight is edgy, modern, funny, and highly skilled."
